Picassiette is a mosaic technique using broken pieces of porcelain and ceramic dinnerware, such as plates, cups, and saucers. The name comes from French and loosely translates to “plate snatcher” or “scavenged plate”, capturing the spirit of the method, transforming discarded or sentimental china into decorative and often whimsical artwork.
The term became popular after artist Raymond Isidore covered his entire home in Chartres, France with colorful mosaics made from discarded crockery in the mid-20th century. His house, Maison Picassiette, is now a celebrated folk art environment.
